Early Game

Levels 1–8

Clear camps while keeping your passive active. Place 3 so you can stand inside its shield zone, then weave attacks between casts of 2. Look for a gank when the enemy is extended and your laner can follow; a failed chase costs camps and tempo. At level 5, Stormbringer opens a tower-dive window, not permission to dive a full-health opponent without a wave.

Reference build: Dusk and Dawn → Heartsteel → Riftmaker → Amaranth's Twinguard → Thornmail.
Summoner spells: Flash + Smite.
Use 3 before the stun from 1 to make its delayed impact easier to land. Bring the wave before a dive and keep an exit route.

Late Game

Levels 9–15

Approach objectives with your team and vision rather than entering the pit alone. Choose between engaging on an exposed carry and protecting your own damage dealer. Hold the second cast of 2 long enough to use its sustain, but do not chase beyond allied follow-up. Smite burn was lowered in 7.3a and Raptors have more health in 7.3b, so old clear-time assumptions should not dictate a contest.

Choose Plated Steelcaps against attack-heavy damage or Mercury’s Treads against magic damage and control. Swap a defensive item for Randuin’s Omen against crit; do not stack armor into an AP-heavy team. Thornmail now costs 2850 (was 2700): keep it for enemies who rely on attacks or healing rather than as an automatic last slot.
